About Me
Hello, I’m Lance Conry, a Hobart based Solution Architect with 30 years experience helping organisations reduce complexity in mission critical operations.
First and foremost, I’m someone who loves family and adventure. I've been fortunate enough to work with amazing organisations across Australia and the world, with whom I've solved complex problems with meaningful impact.
As a solution architect I believe that any requirement, no matter the complexities or challenges, can be broken down into small discreet hurdles. Wherever possible, I like to get on-site to experience the environment my clients operate in, be it the board room, a tent in the bush, or a chopper in the sky. I am just as comfortable sitting with CEO’s in an office as getting dirty in the field with crews. Not only does it provide me with a great perspective, but to be honest, it’s also lots of fun. That perspective does however afford me the perfect lens with which to design solutions to fit people, rather than forcing people to fit ill-fitting processes and systems.
I cut my teeth developing large financial systems in the UK and Australia, where I realised just how boring the financial industry, and their systems are. Thankfully I discovered GIS (geographic information systems) while managing projects in a civil engineering environment; building solutions to deal with the physical world was a lot more satisfying. The finance industry drudgery did however pay off where, when things break, the consequences are significant. This instilled in me the importance of anticipating, identifying and designing for the edge cases and failure modes.
On a parallel path, I thoroughly enjoy the challenges of corporate governance and strategic planning. I've sat on several NFP boards as a director, including as chairman of one organisation with an annual turnover in excess of $35 million.
I have degrees in business and science, as well as being a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. I find myself in the rare position of understanding business, with its strategic and operational imperatives, whilst also being able to develop good architecture and robust solutions. I can't speak Klingon, but am fluent in geek when required.
Outside of work, my passions include woodworking, whitewater kayaking, electric guitar (don't we all want to be a rock star?) and contacting people via morse code using hand built radios from mountain tops... yes, really.
Together with my wife and three children, I live in paradise, otherwise known as Tasmania.
