Hello, I’m Lance Conry, a Solution Architect with 30 years experience helping organisations reduce complexity in mission critical operations.

I thrive on solving complex problems in difficult environments. Does your team need help? Organisations who cannot afford mistakes and poor design trust the work I do, including Department of Defence, Australian Army, US Marine Corps, Hermès and Thomson Reuters.

Highlights

Dept. of Defence

With an increasing requirement to deploy mobile tools and systems into the field, the Department of Defence needed to know what levels of protection current technology platforms offered, and how they correlated to their existing policies for classified information and mobile technology.

Once the review was complete, I developed an architecture, subsequently adopted, to safely manage and transmit data at various classifications.

Army

Field based data collection by its very nature requires taking IT infrastructure into uncontrolled environments. Leaving digital breadcrumbs and data leakage are par for the course in much of modern-day operations but represents an unacceptable risk for the military. Every photo, from metadata to poor choice of backgrounds. Online mapping where the background tiles you download betray areas of interest. Where a lost or compromised device leaks a wealth of intelligence. And of course, transferring data through uncontrolled networks is an ever-evolving technological arms race. And once the field work is done, that data needs to be accessed in restricted or air-gapped systems.

I was tasked with designing, developing and supporting a field-based data capture system used by Australian Defence Force and the US Marine Corps, used on numerous successful deployments, both foreign and domestic. Used for over fifteen years it constantly evolved alongside emerging technologies and requirements.

Hermès

From collecting crocodile eggs whilst hanging from a helicopter, to $100k handbags on Paris shelves, the journey of each egg, hatchling, animal, and finally skin, is subject to a host of government regulation and corporate policies. This is further complicated by the product moving through multiple contractors and organisations at each stage of the journey, with different requirements for access to product data. In addition, government regulators and parent company management require a degree of transparency and oversight of the whole process.

I developed an architecture, then system, covering data acquisition from field collections through incubation and finally hatchlings, with varying access requirements for helicopter pilots, egg collectors, farm managers, traditional owners, government regulators and corporate oversight.

National Roads

Large and oversized vehicles are required to drive to a limited road network, based on vehicle characteristics. The longer/taller/heavier, the more restrictive the network. As such, each journey requires a permit with a defined available network. Considering each state and territory only manages its own network, an interstate journey becomes a significant planning hurdle as permits, a manual process in most jurisdictions, are sought. AUST Roads wanted a single, automated system, covering all of Australia.

I provided an architecture to support centrally managed, automated, national network generation for road users whilst still allowing state sovereignty of their road network data, as well as leaving them in control of the methodology used to determine vehicle access.
